Embracing the Unknown: How to Approach New Tech and Learning Experiences Fearlessly

Acquiring the skills necessary to utilize new technology can be intimidating; however, with the appropriate tools and an altered mindset, these anxieties can be transformed into confidence—and even excitement.

Led by experienced members of VUMC’s Learning and Development team, this panel will identify common fears shared by both trainers and learners regarding workplace technology. In addition, this presentation will offer a variety of strategies for overcoming anxieties about new technology and unfamiliar learning experiences.

To begin, we will review how emotional intelligence techniques can foster productive learning environments during stressful times of change. Participant will learn to use empathy as a tool when teaching or learning technology at any skill level. Finally, the presentation concludes with a discussion about recent shifts toward self-paced learning (SPL) for workplace training and how institutions can establish in-person and digital learning settings that alleviate potential apprehension toward SPL courses.

When put into practice, these tactics can strengthen employee performance as they learn to confidently embrace new professional challenges and experiences.

Get To The Point - with Clarity

Attention spans are getting shorter, and the volume of noise and distraction continues to increase. What is a trainer to do to win attention and get the point across? The secret is understanding the human's brain's operating system, and designing all communications (including training) in such a way as to turn the light on with clarity (not extinguish it with more confusion). The Clarity Fuel Formula, which is the subject of my latest book (The Point: How to Win with Clarity-fueled Communications) is a simple framework that any professional can apply to make their messages stand out in a sea of noisy competition. By applying 4 simple rules, and 8 basic tools, any trainer can become more effective in presentations, meetings, emails, coaching, and every other aspect of human communication.

Luddites and Language Models: Ethical Considerations of Generative AI in Learning Design

Generative AI – like ChatGPT and Bard – has the potential to open new avenues for instructional design and talent development. However, this paradigm shift in educational technology has also raised ethical concerns, particularly when considering the perspectives of learning professionals, corporations, and non-profits. Missteps with AI could mean accusations of plagiarism, copyright infringement, unintentional biases, leaks of proprietary information, and even the forfeiture of the true value of a learning professional to the organization.

This presentation explores the ethical implications of using Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT on the craft of instructional design and facilitation. The session will begin by briefly contextualizing the historical Luddite movement, which arose from concerns over the threat of unemployment due to automation. Drawing parallels to the present day, we will discuss the apprehensions surrounding language models, their potential impact on job roles, and the ethical implications associated with human-machine collaboration. By addressing key ethical considerations – including issues of transparency, bias, privacy, and intellectual property, we will explore the necessity of critical thinking skills and digital literacy as vital tools of the trade that will help promote ethical decision-making.

Ultimately, this presentation seeks to provide insights for corporate and non-profit learning and development professionals. The goal is to empower participants to recognize and navigate the ethical implications of AI integration so that they can foster responsible and mindful engagement with generative AI. By promoting a thoughtful and principled approach, we can harness the potential of AI while ensuring the preservation of our craft as learning professionals.

Video Production and Editing 101 with Camtasia

As talent development professionals, we strive to meet our learners where they are at. Professionals in a wide variety of industries have made the claim that “Video is king of content.” Instructional designers are already tasked with mastering multiple tools to create content in a variety of modalities, sometimes with little to no formal training. So how can we satisfy our learners’ desire for video content if many of us have never acquired the skills to design and build a video?

This mini-workshop will provide a high-level crash course in tool-agnostic video production, editing concepts and terminology, discussion around what tools are out there and at what price points, and we will spend some time practicing building our own videos. Whether you are a consultant, learning manager, instructional designer, or just have an interest in learning more about creating video-based content, this mini-workshop will not disappoint.

Note: Camtasia will be used for tutorials and practice activities.
